Two Cool Team Dragonfly Dreams Cards

Hi Stamping Friends!

It was a long and emotional day yesterday as we cleaned out my grandma Dorothy's apartment in assisted living after her transition into a nursing home.

Grandma hunt

Look at this pretty lady!  She's 94-years-old and has barely taken more than a Tylenol her whole life!  Her short-term memory isn't very good anymore, but she's still quick with her sarcastic wit!  I pray that if I'm lucky enough to live that long, I'll have the feisty attitude and sense of humor that she does!  Love you, Grandma!

Today, I'm sharing a couple of cards that we made at a recent Too Cool Team shoebox swap!  The Dragonfly Dreams stamp set and Detailed Dragonfly Thinlits are a popular bundle from the Occasions Catalog.  I'm currently working on finalizing my March Stamp-of-the-Month Class featuring this fabulous combination, so I'll be sharing details soon.

1) Janet's Dazzling Dragonfly Pop Up Card

Oooh!  What a fun & sparkly card designed by Janet Shinn!  The card front is so soft and pretty in those cool colors, then you open it up for a dragonfly surprise pop-up!

Background BasicsThis card begins with a 3-7/8" x 5-1/8" piece of Mint Macaron card stock that's texture embossed with the Petal Burst folder.  It's adhered with the "de-bossed" side up onto a 4" x 5-1/4" piece of Whisper White, then mounted onto an Island Indigo card base.

Sentiment LayersThe banner is a 2" x 4-1/2" piece of Island Indigo, punched with the Banner Triple for the fishtailed bottom.  The Watercolor Wings greeting is stamped in Island Indigo at the bottom, then it's adhered to the card front with SNAIL and accented with a single Rhinestone Jewel.  The Whisper White circle is die cut with the Layering Circles Framelits, then popped up with Dimensionals to create a foundation for the Dragonfly.

Two Dazzling DragonfliesThe Dragonfly Dreams image was stamped in VersaMark on Whisper White card stock, then sprinkled with White Embossing Powder and heated with the Heat Tool until glossy & smooth.  It was die cut with the Detailed Dragonfly Thinlits. You'll need TWO identical dragonflies: one for the card front and one for the inside.

Positioning TIP: That photopolymer stamp has a super-skinny tail that can easily curve as you mount it onto the block. Even just a slight bend can make it impossible to die-cut accurately with the straight die.  I recommend laying the photopolymer stamp stamp-side-down on a flat surface, so that it rests naturally, then position the block over the top of it to pick it up.

Island Indigo ink was sponged over the top of the die-cut, accentuating the beautiful wing details.  Then, a little Multipurpose Glue was lightly dabbed onto the wings and they were sprinkled with Dazzling Diamonds glitter!  Wow!  It looks so amazing!

Dragonfly Pop-UpInside the card, Janet added a simple pop-up fold that features the second dazzling dragonfly.  Create that pop-up by starting with a 7-3/4" x 4-3/4" piece of Whisper White.  Using the Simply Scored tool, score down the center of the card at the 3-7/8" mark.  Make a tick mark down that score line at the 2-1/2" point.  Make tick marks along the long side at the 2" and 5-5/8" marks.  Score from the tick marks along the top diagonally down to the 2-1/2" point on the original score line.

Adhering The Inside LayerCrease all of the score lines really well with the "V" folded inward to make that pop-up.  Keep the inside all folded up to adhere it to the inside of the card with Fast Fuse.  Adhere one side first, as close to the center score line as possible, then close the other side of the card to finish adhering it.

Attach the Dazzling Dragonfly to the pop-up section with more Fast Fuse, positioning it at an angle, but making sure that the dragonfly remains side the card borders while the card is closed.

2) Rita's Copper Dragonfly Dreams Birthday Card

Wow!  The copper accents on Rita Berning's card make it so elegant!  Very clean and stunning design!

Stamped BackgroundThis card starts by stamping the Dragonfly Dreams image randomly in Crumb Cake ink over a 5-1/4" x 4" layer of Very Vanilla.  The stamping is so light…you may have to stamp off once to create this subtle pattern.  That layer is mounted onto a Basic Black card base.

Rita - dragonfly dreams copper 4

Sweet SentimentThe Rose Wonder birthday greeting was stamped in VersaMark Ink onto a 5-1/4" x 1" strip of Soft Suede card stock, then sprinkled with Copper Embossing Powder and set with the Heat Tool.  Love that color!  The strip is adhered to the card front with SNAIL.

Rita - dragonfly dreams copper 2

Copper DragonflyThe dragonfly is die cut with the Detailed Dragonfly Thinlits from Copper Foil.  I love that Rita cut the piece with the copper foil side down, so that the "wrong" side, with it's beautiful ridged outlines, are on the copper side.  So pretty!  A second solid black dragonfly die-cut was created to make a foundation for the foil one.  Adhere that one to the card front with SNAIL.

Finishing TouchesTo add the Copper Thread, first add some Glue Dots to the back of the copper die-cut to make a sticky area.  Then, wrap the thread around your four fingers several times, twist into a "figure 8" shape, and attach on that sticky back.  Fluff the loops, then add a Dimensional and attach over the black dragonfly die-cut.

Rita also added some Rhinestone Jewels to the body, and they were colored with a copper colored Sharpie to match.

1 thought on “Two Cool Team Dragonfly Dreams Cards”

  1. What a sweet story about your special grandma. So glad you still have her. Just a thought though… I wish I had spent more time with my grandma asking her about her life in England before she came to America at the age of 14. She never just talked about her life there. I have done some quite extensive genealogy work on her, but it would have been nice to have first account memories of her life there and even about her life before I was born. Don’t make my mistake. Life can get so busy that I just didn’t even think that these missed memories would be so important in later years of my life. And by the way, this dragonfly bundle is on my “to get” list and yours here is so pretty. And I love the way it pops out. Thanks so much for sharing this card and all the others from the past! God bless you, Linda. 🙂
