Hi Stamping Friends!

Today, I'm sharing another technique from my upcoming Stamper Sampler: Too Cool Backgrounds class!  This one is so easy to do and SO MUCH FUN!

Sleigh Ride With Magic of H2O Technique

We'll be using layers of ink and water to create this awesome night sky that looks like cool snow flurries, or even twinkly stars!  I just love the it!  The technique is called Magic of H2O and found it on Lydia Fiedler's Understand Blue blog.

Background Basics—This card has three simple layers: the 4" x 5-1/4" Whisper White layer with the cool background, a 4" x 2-3/4" Whisper White die-cut layer and the Whisper White card base.

Magic of H2O Technique—There is an easy 4-step process for getting the pretty flecked background.
  1. Sponge or brayer on the lightest "spotlight" color.  In this case, I used Tempting Turquoise ink.
  2. Sponge on a medium shade along the top half.  I used Night of Navy ink.
  3. Sponge on a dark color over the medium shade.  I used Blackberry Bliss.
  4. Dip your fingertips into a cup of water and flick on water droplets!

As the water droplets dry, they pull the color away and lighten!  So cool!

TIP #1: I prefer to use a brayer for the first layer of ink to really saturate the paper.  You need really good ink coverage for this to work properly.

TIP #2: When sponging, rub in small circles that start off the edge of the card stock for a smoother looking blend.  If you start rubbing the ink-loaded sponge on the card stock first, it will leave a heavy ink mark.

TIP #3: After you dip your finger tips in the water, I dabbed them once on scrap paper to eliminate some of the water, so I didn't have huge droplets of water.  Less water is better.

If you want to see this technique in action, watch Lydia's Magic of H2O video.

Sleigh Ride Die-Cut—I die-cut a piece of 4" x 2-3/4" Whisper White card stock with the new Sleigh Ride Edgelits and adhered it over the background with SNAIL on the snow his and a Glue Dot behind the sleigh and horse.

Sweet Sentiment—I stamped the curved phrase from the Jingle All The Way stamp set in Night of Navy.

Two Cool—For my second version, I stepped up the same card a bit!  Notice that huge water drops?  That was how I learned that it was a good idea to use less water!  You don't want to have big droplets hanging off of your fingertips. Flick them off or dab them off first.

Double Sleigh Ride Layer—This time, I added a second die-cut layer using the Sleigh Ride Edgelits trees.  I changed the slope of the hill that the sleigh was on for a better layered effect.

Sparkly Snow—I also added some Dazzling Diamonds glitter along the surface of the hills and on the trees with the help of the 2-Way Glue Pen.

Three Cool—I had so much fun with the first pair of cards, I decided to try a different color combination on a horizontal version!

Simple Indigo—This background was created with a first layer of Pool Party, a second layer of Marina Mist, and a top layer of Island Indigo.  The die-cut layer started as a 5-1/4" x 2" piece. The sentiment is stamped in Island Indigo ink.

Four Cool—For a stepped up version, I used the same colors, but added die-cut accents on one layer.

Double Die-Cuts—I die-cut this layer with the trees Sleigh Ride edgelits first.  Then, I die-cut the sleigh & horse on some scrap card stock and carefully trimmed them off and re-positioned them on the hill.  If I were to do it over, I would have started with the sleigh, then transplanted the trees, because they are a lot easier to glue back on.  I added Dazzling Diamonds to this card, too!
