Secret Garden White Washing

W washing - two cool

I can't wait to create this card with my
Wow Techniques Class tonight!  It takes a little time to do the 3-step
White Washing technique, but you get such pretty, pretty, pretty
results!  I've included a tutorial at the bottom of this post.

W washing - turquoise

You can do white washing on any color background, even dark colors,
which is the reason it is Too Cool! I started with a Crumb Cake card
stock base, but the darker the color background, the more those
colorful flowers are gonna pop!

W washing - turquoise 2

I embossed my flowers in white, then added a white wash of White Craft Ink, then colored and shaded them with Wisteia Wonder, Melon Mambo and Tempting Turquoise inks. See a complete tutorial below.

The sentiment is from Perfect Punches stamp set, stamped in Melon Mambo on Whisper White and punched with the Extra Large Oval Punch.

W washing - daffodil

I finished off the card with a strip of Melon Mambo Designer Series Paper from the Brights Stack.  It's decorated with a Finishing Touches Edgelit die-cut border and some Wisteria Wonder Ruffled Ribbon adhered with Sticky Strip.

The sentiment is also from Perfect Punches, this time punched with the Curly Label Punch.

I tried a Daffodil Delight flower this time, shaded with some Calypso Coral ink.

3-Step White Washing Tutorial

W washing - step 1

  • Step 1: Emboss—I stamped the line images from Secret Garden in VersaMark, then embossed them with White Embossing Powder.

W washing - step 2

  • Add a little White Craft Ink Refill onto a plastic palette.  I used the lid of an embellishment container. Fill an Aqua Painter with water, then squeeze a few drops of water onto the ink to thin it.

W washing - step 3

  • Step 2: White Wash—Use the Aqua Painter to paint a thin layer of White Craft Ink over the top of your embossed image.  Let it dry completely.  Use the low setting of your Heat Tool to dry it, if necessary.

W washing - step 4

  • With your ink pad still closed, squeeze your ink pad together to transfer some ink from the pad to the lid.  Now you can use it as a palette.  TIP: Firm Foam Ink Pads will transfer lots of ink, but the old felt style may not transfer as easily.  Just add a few drops from your Refill Ink onto the lid instead.

W washing - step 5

  • Step 3: Color—Use Blender Pens to pick up the ink from the palette and color in the image.  I like to create shading for depth.  I do this by starting with laying down color on one side, then blending it out to the other side.  I've worked from the left side of the petal to right on this image, but you could also work from the center of the flower outward.  Generally, always start with thin, light layers of color and add darker areas of color for shading.

You really have to try this technique!  So much fun!
